Rewards for people causing climate change : Prison for those trying to stop it !

Last week 3 protestors against fracking were jailed for up to 16 months.  Their ‘crime’ ? For occupying lorries that belonged to Quadrilla. This is the company that plans to ‘frack’ against local people’s wishes, in Lancashire. And in doing so, contribute to catastrophic climate change.

This looks like a concerted attack by the ‘establishment’ on environmental protest. The police pressed for the maximum sentences and dodgy judge Robert Altham handed down draconian sentences after he had refused to allow the defendants to talk about fracking and why they did what they did. In short, he prevented them from defending themselves.

Meanwhile, the government is promoting a new runway at Heathrow which will massively increase emissions of CO2, fuelling further climate change.

As Climate Change News says:

A year after the men were arrested and hours before parliament’s summer break, the government quietly granted permission for fracking to go ahead at the Preston New Road site. That same summer break brought some of the most violent impacts of climate change we have ever seen. A global heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures, raging wildfires from Sweden and Manchester to Greece and California, and heat-related deaths in several countries.

The government’s decision to launch a whole new fossil fuel industry while forest fires burned in the Arctic circle was an unforgivable and reckless act that can only worsen the climate breakdown already impacting millions of people around the world. And while their voices were silenced in court, ministers are silencing the rest of us in our communities.

and Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said:

This draconian clampdown on peaceful protest reeks of desperation from the fracking industry and the government.

The government’s decision to launch a whole new fossil fuel industry while forest fires burned in the Arctic circle was an unforgivable and reckless act that can only worsen the climate breakdown already impacting millions of people around the world. And while their voices were silenced in court, ministers are silencing the rest of us in our communities.”

Nic Ferriday, from West London Friends of the Earth, commented. “At the same time as principled people are jailed for trying to avert catastrophic climate change, the government has been wilfully planning to increase climate-changing emissions by pursuing a third runway at Heathrow. A third runway would generate a staggering 2.9 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) – 2.2 trillion litres – annually.

Instead of putting John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow, in the dock for being a climate criminal, minister Chris Grayling and the government are fawning over him, helping him to get a gigantic bonus for his contribution to catastrophic climate change.

No wonder John Sauven, head of Greenpeace, said “It’s a strange society that massively rewards those responsible for causing more climate change while putting those trying to stop it in jail.
